G5: Home-school computers: one family's experience of supporting a child with learning disabilities
Author: Father of a Year 8 child with special educational needs (SEN), Durham
Date: 2005
At the invitation of his local College of Further Education, the father took an introductory ICT class at the Community Learning Centre, with the aim of supporting his son with the computer at home. His aims grew to gaining City and Guilds Level 2 qualifications in ICT. He has already achieved distinctions in Level 1 work. The man's whole family are now involved in ICT activities, and he himself has become much more involved in non ICT-based activities, such as helping at his son's school and fundraising. He states that his own ICT development has directly fed into supporting his son. He kept a short diary of his computer sessions with his son, which showed that the child's concentration span was gradually improving. The parent goes on to share his concerns about whether the help which his son is getting is consistent at home and school.
