P35: Year 3 pupils' changing perceptions about taking laptops home
Author: Charlotte Ashton, Class Teacher, Hartside Primary School, Durham
Date: 2005
The teacher investigated how taking a laptop home with them was impacting on her pupils, by means of a questionnaire. 19 out of 22 pupils stated that they had become more confident in using Word and typing, while all were more confident in logging on. However, as all the children who were not taking the laptops home had also become more confident in doing these activities, it may be that ICT lessons had caused the increased confidence, rather than taking the laptops home. 50% of the children used the laptops solely for homework, while the remainder used them for other activities too. 10 of the children liked taking the laptops home, 8 did not like it and the others liked it sometimes. Short battery life, limited storage space and lost homework were identified by the children as deterrents to using the laptops.
