S1: Helping low achievers access Computer-Aided Design / Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAD/ CAM)
Author: Kate Webley, Head of Design and Creative Art, Shireland Language College
Date: 2005
This piece explores effective teaching methods for enabling lower ability students to develop skills and confidence to access CAD/CAM and use it creatively in a design context. Fifty randomly selected pupils from across Year 7, covering all ability ranges, were given a multiple choice paper-based questionnaire about the project. These, together with the pupils' work and videoed interviews of four pupils, formed the teacher's evidence. The evidence suggested that lower ability students found CAD/CAM more difficult to use than more traditional subjects.
