FE40: The HeadStart Maths Program: A Case Study.
Author: Peter Crisp, Sandwell College
Date: 2006
Summary
Peter discusses the use of the Headstart maths program in the college as a way of generating interest in the subject amongst the students. He felt that involving ICT in maths lessons would make the subject more interesting and encourage students to get more involved.
Action
After seeing demonstrations of three online maths programs, Headstart was chosen as being the most suitable for the college's requirements. Headstart was then incorporated into maths lessons, with work plans assigned to suit the levels of each student.
Outcomes
Peter concludes that Headstart is an effective way of constructing and teaching lessons, analysing student progress and performing administration tasks. Results from a recent pilot scheme at the college showed a marked improvement in ability, attendance and behaviour.
