P10: Integrating art in ICT in the primary classroom
Author: Shearon Gordon, Class Teacher, Ripple Infants' School, Barking and Dagenham
Date: 2005

Shearon describes a technique for using ICT to explore pattern-making with a group of Year 2 children. A good deal of peer learning occurred among the students, who shared and developed skills by communicating with one another in their first languages, not English. Breaking down the task into a series of small, attainable steps was difficult but important. The computer task was often too teacher intensive for a whole class to complete. It was necessary to manage non-ICT based work in the same session in order to manage the adult/pupil/hardware ratio. It was also found that children's ICT skills can and will advance very rapidly, making it necessary for the teacher to advance their own skills and integrate higher level tasks into the work.
