P52: Learning to Listen: Using ICT to capture pupils' perceptions and help the teacher to respond
Author: Richard R Moult, Sunnyside Primary School
Date: 2006

Summary

Richard discusses the Durham Learning Gateway as a method of gathering feedback from pupils and getting to know them better. As someone new to the teaching profession, he hoped the Gateway would be a useful method of communicating with the pupils, similar to the way email is used in industry.

Action

Richard had previously tried using a traditional suggestion box to gather feedback from the pupils. He then set up an electronic one using the Durham Learning Gateway, and posted some questions on there to find out how the children felt about their lessons and their environment.

Outcomes

The children immediately started posting on the electronic suggestion box and were keen to develop threads from other pupil's postings. Richard feels it has been an invaluable way of getting to know what they are thinking, and has used their feedback to improve some aspects of his teaching.
