P58: Making a video diary to see if the digital blue camera as a tool for self expression can have an impact on a child with Asperger's Syndrome
Author: Wendy Clark, Teaching Assistant, Furze Infants
Date: 2006

Summary

Wendy reflects on the use of a digital blue camera with a child with Asperger's Syndrome to see if it improved his ability to communicate his feelings. She describes how the child was able to express himself in a way that he had previously been unable to do.

Action

The child was given the digital blue camera and asked to produce a short video diary describing his time in the school nursery. After viewing the video with the child and praising his work, he was asked to produce another video in reception and Year 1 classrooms. The child was then allowed to take the camera home to do some filming outside the school environment.

Outcomes

In the video diary the child was able to express his feelings in a clear way that Wendy felt he would have been unable to do previously. Both his class teacher and the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (Senco) felt that the camera had provided a valuable stimulus and would be a useful tool with other children with similar behavioural or communication problems.
