FE28: Developing and evaluating effective e-learning resources with FE ESOL teachers

Summary

Tim collaborated with the Content Workshop to develop a Word Spell e-learning resource for English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) students. He then evaluated it by comparing it to more traditional teaching methods.

Action

Tim met with the developer from the Content Workshop to discuss the development of the Word Spell e-learning tool. They agreed to base it on the traditional Look-Cover-Write-Check (LCWC) approach with the additional function of allowing the tutors to put in their own vocabulary. The new tool was then incorporated into Entry Level 3 teaching sessions along with a more traditional LCWC approach. Feedback was then gathered from both students and tutor.

Outcomes

Feedback from the students was mixed suggesting that, although they found it engaging, they missed the verbal elements of more traditional methods. The tutor felt that the tool was simple to use and could be used as "one tool among many", although he had reservations about the time it took to create the resource. Both tutor and students felt that the addition of sound would be useful; however this would also increase the setup time.
