FE7: Exploring IT, including email, to support the learning of childcare students
Author: Elaine Mattinson, Childcare Tutor, Bishop Auckland College, County Durham
Date: 2005
Elaine describes her approach to teaching her students to use email, in preparation for its use in peer-mentoring. She identifies three key barriers to gaining ICT skills as: working with written hand-outs; working in an isolated way on a PC; the feeling that technical support staff were unapproachable. All of these indicate the need for a sociable approach to teaching ICT skills.
Consulting students about their learning preferences prior to the development of teaching strategies is important and highly effective, argues Elaine. Nevertheless, the process of teaching pupils took up almost 12 one hour sessions, partially due to absences and technical difficulties.
