FE18: Engaging with non-traditional learners - a collaborative approach
Author: Elaine Mattinson, Childcare Tutor, Bishop Auckland College, County Durham
Date: 2005

Elaine investigated whether the ICT skills of the parents of local children could be improved through collaborative work between the primary school and the college. Parents and helpers at the school were encouraged to use ICT to design and produce resources, artefacts and cards of ideas based around a storybook, to be contained within a Storysack to be given to the children. The activities were geared towards helping the adults to achieve the skills which they each wanted to learn. A questionnaire was given to eight participants at the start of the programme in order to obtain baseline data, and then repeated four weeks later. In the follow up questionnaire, five of the eight participants stated that they now knew more about using computers. All eight stated that they would like to do further courses, ranging from computer courses to childcare or teaching assistant qualifications.
