FE29: A Student's Experience of Video-Conferencing
Author: Bal Kaur, A-level Student , Sandwell College
Date: 2006

Summary

Bal gives an account of her experiences of the teaching of A2 Biology via Video-Conferencing from a student's point of view. She points out both advantages and disadvantages of using the system.

Action

The teacher had relocated to Los Angeles midway through the A2 Biology course. To maintain continuity for the students, a Video-Conferencing link was used to enable the same teacher to carry on with the course. Instant Messaging, email and an Interactive Smartboard were also used to complement the Video-Conferencing technology.

Outcomes

Bal felt that Video-Conferencing was an excellent solution, and that the exposure to various other forms of technology was also extremely useful. She felt that the class were encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning and that the teacher had been able to provide excellent support to the students, the only drawback being occasional problems with the reliability of the video link.
