FE22: Evaluation of the effectiveness of a series of digitised video clips as a teaching aid.
Author: Chris Cooper, Sandwell College
Date: 2005

Summary

Chris investigated the use of short video clips as a method of allowing students to catch up on practical Science work that they had missed in the Access to Higher Education course. He acknowledged that this can never be a replacement for the 'real thing' but felt that it would at least give the students an appreciation of practical techniques in the operation of machinery or scientific instruments. Despite some problems associated with the transferring and playing back of the clips, student responses were very positive while other staff saw potential for further use of video clips in their teaching.

Action

A number of short video clips were made demonstrating practical work in scientific subjects. These were given to students when they had missed the original work through absence. Through a questionnaire and group discussion the students' views were sought on the value of the clips, along with the opinions of the college staff involved.

Outcomes

The major problems involved compatibility issues between the colleges produced material and students' home computer equipment. The time taken to record the video clips was also an issue. However, the positive feedback from both students and staff made this a very worthwhile exercise and worth further exploration. Students felt that the clips were the next best thing to a personal demonstration.
