Summary

The teacher used Video-Conferencing to teach A2 Biology students at Sandwell College from his location in Los Angeles, California. Here he discusses different ways of making the lessons more enjoyable, interactive and successful for both tutors and students.

Action

The teacher used a Polycom ViaVideo II video camera to set up a link over the internet, so that students and tutor could see and hear each other. He then used several different methods to make the lessons more interactive. These included handouts which required additional information to be filled in, the use of digital cameras, a WebQuest, Instant Messaging systems, email, a desktop sharing tool and an interactive Smartboard.

Outcomes

The teacher found that the students enjoyed the interactive elements of the lessons, leading to them taking a much greater interest in the subject. He also found that they became much more independent in their practical work, supporting each other rather than turning to the tutor for help.
