FE19: Using ICT to encourage students with visual impairment to participate in lifelong learning

Summary

This study reviews development of an ICT course given to an elderly, blind and partially deaf student, promoting independent learning. The course was very successful and led to the student taking City & Guilds Levels 1 and 2. The student also won the national NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) award for learning. The success of this student led to other people with similar disabilities taking courses. One of these students comments that a major problem for the visually impaired is the variety of software packages available, leading to a lack of standardisation. There are also extra costs generated resulting from the need to train staff.
