G3: An administrator's role in supporting learners in the community
Author: Kathy Glendenning, Centre Administrator, Spennymore Community Learning Centre
Date: 2005
Kathy's reflections offer us an insight into the value of administrators' interpersonal skills for recruitment and retention in adult education. Kathy finds that a large part of her role is to offer personal support to students, to earn their trust, and to identify more sensitive learning and support needs such as literacy and numeracy. "I initially assumed that my role was less important and influential than the tutors'," says Kathy, "but gradually realised that I also had a valuable contribution to make in retaining students and encouraging them to realise their goals."
