G8: Teacher and Developer Collaboration: Creating e-learning teaching

Summary

Tim discusses the value of the Content Workshop (opened in 2003) and its success in developing e-learning tools for use in schools. He presents 3 case studies which demonstrate how the Workshop can be a valuable tool for teachers, and which also highlight some pitfalls which can lead to less successful e-learning exercises. He stresses the importance of communication between teacher and developer to the success of e-learning projects, and shows from teacher feedback that they are of great benefit to pupils, particularly those of lower ability.

Action

The Content Workshop, consisting of 2 Content Developers and a Graphic Designer, visited each school and explained the services and facilities offered. Brain storming sessions then took place with the teachers to identify areas where e-learning resources could be used in the classroom. Once these had been put into practice feedback was received via questionnaires sent out to the teachers.

Outcomes

Feedback from the teachers was generally very positive. Teachers felt that the pupils found learning more enjoyable, were more motivated and that there was a healthy element of competition. Tim felt that good communication between the content team and the teachers was vital to the success of the projects. The content team are now trialing a system to improve the lines of communication which allows exchanges of ideas between teachers and developers via a forum and updates all members of the project team via email.
