P11: Using ICT to support still life in the art curriculum
Author: Chris Varnom, Class Teacher, Manor Junior School, Barking and Dagenham
Date: 2004
Summary
The use of a visualiser for display and demonstration saved time and facilitated peer evaluation and class discussion.
Action
The teacher introduced the visualiser to the teaching of still life to a Year 4 art class, and reflected on the experience.
The disruption and awkwardness of gathering the class around a table to view the demonstration was replaced by a smooth and swift display that engaged the attention of all. The teacher was able to show precisely what he was talking about, as the magnification capacity enabled the whole class to look together at fine detail. Students then used the visualiser to display their work to the whole class who discussed it, and used the internet for research on the Tate website.
Impacts
Time was saved in the whole-class demonstration, creating more time for individual practical work. Learner engagement was sustained by the exciting technology, while peer evaluation and group discussion was stimulated.
