P17: Using digital video to improve children's capacity to evaluate their literacy productions
Author: Sarah Mangle, Class teacher, Hunwick Primary School, Durham
Date: 2005
During literacy lessons, the teacher set her children the task of producing and filming their own persuasive adverts in small groups. Having filmed themselves acting in the adverts, the whole class watched the adverts and gave feedback on their effectiveness so that they could be improved if necessary.
The teacher found that the power of the spoken word and the visual image were very useful for children who found it difficult to evaluate their own work. Children appreciate the instant feedback that being able to rewind their work gives. Watching films engaged the pupils, and was an effective stimulus for discussion and comment.
