P48: Using the Digital Camera to improve School / Home links
Author: Sarah Barbet-Sawyer, Furze Infants
Date: 2005
Summary
Sarah felt that allowing pupils to take a digital camera home to take photos of their favourite things, which would later be put into montages as a collection of research, would help to encourage better links between parents and the school. She also hoped to encourage greater independent learning among the children. She received favourable feedback from both children and parents.
Action
Children were allowed to take a digital camera home with them and encouraged to work with their parents and take pictures of 'things that made them happy at home'.
The children then downloaded and selected their favourite photos and discussed them in small groups. The children used Photoshop to arrange their pictures into photomerges. These were then displayed in the classroom and parents were invited to see the results.
Outcomes
Sarah felt that the way that the children displayed their photos provided some insight into the types of learners that they were. She also received good parental feedback, suggesting that the project had gone some way to breaking down the boundaries between parent and school.
