S2: Using handheld computers to stimulate critical studies in A-Level art
Author: Ellie Burkett, Class Teacher, Warren Comprehensive, Barking and Dagenham
Date: 2005
The teacher investigated whether using interactive art software on handheld computers would improve her pupils' analytical and critical skills as they viewed art in a local gallery. Observers' comments and students' responses, artwork and critical analysis constituted the teacher's evidence. The project improved staff and pupils' confidence, motivation, concentration and involvement. The teacher concluded that the software and handheld computers propagated independent learning, improved motivation and raised attainment levels - 10 out of 14 of the students gained their highest marks on the critical appreciation part of the A-Level, a marked improvement on previous years.
