FE35: Developing a flexible A-Level strategy using ICT
Author: Will Ellis, Sandwell College
Date: 2006

Summary

Will moved away from the traditional teacher-led approach and used an ICT-based one to teach A-Level Biology to a group of students. Here he discusses the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and discusses how ICT can be used in future both in Biology and other subject areas.

Action

Will developed an ICT-based 'learning experience' for his students, using a series of learning packages distributed via the College's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Students were encouraged to study in their own time and assessed on a weekly basis to monitor their progress.

Outcomes

This approach was generally popular with the students, most of whom were motivated to learn independently rather then rely on the traditional teacher-led method. Biology was seen as a particularly suitable subject for this approach which may not be as useful in other subject areas.
